Pigeon Standard training?Hello, I just received my very first American fantail pigeon.
It is white and I am unsure what gender it is. http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/616...ownloadthe.jpg here it is as im drying it after it's first bath. The reason for my thread here is to ask how can I train him/her to stand in a "Standard" posture. I have never trained a pigeon, only taught parrots to talk. Any advice for a novice? I would go to a pigeon show and ask someone there, however there wil be one in a couple months, id like to train it as soon as i can. ![]() Thank you |

Let me answer your question about training.
Fantails are not really trained to pose, this is an inherited trait that has been developed by pigeon fanciers over centuries. They may be acclimatized, conditioned and/or trained for showing, but they must come from the nest with certain qualities before they cn even be considered for showing. Refer to the "Breed of the Week" for my article posted last October on Fantails.

The only training show pigeons need, is to be tame and comfortable in the show cage. You can tame them by feeding peanuts from your hand, and to get them used to small show cages, you'd just need to make one similar, and introduce it to them several times, or you could just keep them in individual cages all the time.
