Question

cold weather

I have eight pairs on 2 to 4 day old babies, and we are getting some cold air coming through (0 degrees F). My loft is well ventilated, and I have a small heater on the floor and a red heat bulb pointed at the nest boxes from the ceiling. Should I be concerned about the cold?

How warm do you keep the loft? This really isn't the right time of year to be breeding where it gets that cold. I would be concerned, but I'm sure others will come in with more advice and opinions. I would keep them warm. If you put a small thermometer in the nest box, you would have a better idea of just how warm the heat lamp is keeping them.

The time to become very concerned is when the babies are about 7 days old until they are about two weeks. They parents will leave the young for periods of time to get food for the young and will not always return until they find it. It only takes an hour or so to affect the babies.

One soluyion is to keep the loft warm, about 45 degrees, but an easier way is to feed your birds at the break of dawn. After two weeks old, they are generally large enough to withstand colder temps.

I raise babies this time of year every year. I've never lost one to the cold, except for a Satinette. The parents were very neglectfull of the babies after 8 days and I learned the hard way. My homers however do just fine. I don't even have any heat in my loft, so I would guess that your babies will be ok. They're already there (the babies), so all you can do is keep an eye on them. We're expecting some unusually cold weather here for the next 3 or 4 days, so I've already made plans to stay at home and keep an eye on things. I don't expect any problems though.
If you can, put a bowl of feed in each nest box so that the parents don't have to go far to eat. That's what I do and don't have a problem.
I agree however that unless you have a good reason to raise babies this time of year, I wouldn't do it.
