Well, cod liver oil provides the bird with vitamin D and vitamin E, but the oil must be fresh. Old or rancid oil, the vitamin E will be gone. It is good for them especially during the winter months, when they may get less sunshine.

I give it to them in the winter-when it isn't sunny, it is good source of vitamin D and E.
It also helps absorb Calcium and other minerals. Make sure to get an organic mercury free brand too, and give a few drops over the seed, or a cap down the throat once a month, no more.

Fish oil contains viatamin D & E and it is used mostly in the winter months when the birds get less sunshine. It helps with fertility as well. Calcium is absorbed more efficiently with viatamin D. All good in preparing your breeders for the upcoming season. Bill Hatcher article on Trout pellets is posted on the Purina site http://www.saddlehomersusa.org/NestNutrition.html The main ingredients in trout pellet are soybean meal (protein 36%) and fish oils.
Off topic: Try using Spirulina powder with your feed. In the last three years I've not lost any youngsters. |

Well, either way they're not getting much sunshine.

Yes, they normally get vitamin D from the sun, and since they don't get sunlight much they need the supplement.
