Looking for my first Homing Pigeons

Hi,
I've been reading this forum for the last 6 months and have finally decided to join the fun. I'm just about done ( finishing today) my first loft. I'm looking for a few young pigeons to fly. I am not looking for breeders I just want 2-3 birds. I'm in love with old german owls. I preferably white, white and yellow or red. I'm located in Virginia but I'm more than willing to pay for shipping. Any suggestions?

Tracy, glad you decided to join us. I like the OGO's too........however, if you want birds to fly around your loft, you need to look at other breeds. Homers or Rollers is what I would suggest. Can I ask where in VA you are? I'm down in Martinsville, the southern part of VA about 20 miles from the NC border.
We'd love to see pictures of your loft? I'd be careful about saying you only want 2 or 3 pigeons. They're VERY addictive............

I'm in the Hampton roads area. I'd post pictures but my mother accidentally took my camera home with her when she came to look at our new house. My loft is not huge it's more like a giant hutch with an enclosed roost and a large wire area for sunning flying and feeding. It has a fan for ventilation in the summer and a small heater in the roost for the winter. Nothing like the loft I see on your page. ( It looks WONDERFUL btw)

I'm leaning toward homers but I want them to be pretty. Know any good breeders/sellers?

welcome fellow virginian!...would love to see pictures of your loft...yes as Renee said, if you want to fly will need homers or rollers. how big is your loft? you may be able to house homers and some old germans or other fancy pigeons but keep those safe in the loft and just fly the homers or rolleres. I have homers and now four seraphims which look like ogos but moult out to all white...pic from april female has yet to loose the colors...
...or you can see them in my album.

Ok, so you're over on the coast. Well, how big is your loft? Can you post pictures of it? I ask, because this time of year it's usually a little difficult to find baby homers. Most people I know for instance, race their birds, and we stopped breeding for this year back in March for the most part. Few people raise babies all year round. Some do however and if you are willing to pay shipping, you could probably find some babies somewhere.

I'd love to post pictures but like I said my camera is a few hundred miles away.

My loft is 51 inches long 90 inches high and 51 inches deep. It has a open wire section the same size.

If I need to wait till next season I can. No rush really. I am just a little excited. My grandfather had two trained homers when I was younger. They where as tame as you could get and he had them for nearly 20 years. I loved them growing up.

Thank you. No one needs a loft as big as mine, trust me.........LOL

This man races birds. He also sells his birds for quite a bit of money. If you just want some "pets" he MIGHT have some that he would give you.........don't know, you'd have to ask. I expect he also quite breeding quite a while ago, but he's got a pretty big operation, so he might have some squeakers now.........

you may be able to find some oops babies that someone wants to find a place for...keep checking back you never know. if shipping, it can't be too hot or they won't ship...also the homers need to be young ...4 or 5 weeks and eating on thier own to train to your loft/hutch.

Thanks! Yes, I want "pets" as I don't want to breed, race or show. I just enjoy watching them fly and the personality. I'll shoot him an email and see if he has any squeakers he would be willing to part from at a reasonable price. I know racing birds can run you a fortune and as much as I love the little guys I'm not in the market for a 700 dollar bird.

That's why I thought looking now would be a good idea. Ideally I was thinking it would be nice to find someone who just had eggs laid. So that they would be able to be shipped in the fall if they had to be.

Anyone know anything about these guys?

They have great selection ( lots of different homers) but they say the birds a 3-15 months unflown and unmated. Could I still train them to my hutch?

Man, my computer is running SSLLOOWWWW..........
I've "heard" of them, but have never dealt with them. Don't know what sort of set up they have, how they breed their birds, etc........but just looking through the web site quickly, it appears that they have every strain of racing pigeon known to man. That's doubtful IMO........
Seems like a lot of money to spend on birds to just fly in the back yard. And I doubt you could "pick" the color you wanted.
Ever heard of Eggbid? http://www.eggbid.com/ You might want to watch their site for a few days. This person www.flyhome.name races birds, but he's also into color projects and sometimes lists some beautifully colored birds on Eggbid for $20 or so. Of course, shipping is what would get you because he's in California, but it's something you can check out.

I have not known anyone who has purchased birds from them so...I don't know. seems a little pricey, but if you find what you want it maybe worth it to you...I like the coop tumblers, but with shipping they would be 170.00.
also if you get a pair you could let them raise two babies and you would have 4 pigeons...then you would need to use the dummy eggs as to not have anymore as they multiply quickly...maybe someone will post that has bought from them....keep checking back.
