Well, No New Pics This Weekend .. Here's Why ..

It has been raining and raining and raining here in Southern California .. whoever did that old song had it right .. it never rains in Southern California .. but when it does, it POURS.

The backyard is a quagmire .. that's thanks to all the dabbling ducks .. there isn't a blade of grass or even a weed left .. thus .. when it rains, it gets really nasty and muddy in the duck pens. That requires the addition of a couple hundred pounds of stuff like cheap clay cat litter to soak up all the wetness. It's a nasty job and kinda takes the starch right outta you.

Then there are all the new incoming who haven't even had their photo op yet. Quite a few new pigeons with varying degrees of health and injury problems .. the babies that were here to worry about and watch over, and the newly dumped rabbits at the duck pond. I was there yesterday (yes, in the rain) to check on all the birds and spotted something from afar that did not register .. as in .. what the heck is that? Well that, and the other unknown object turned out to be two newly dumped domestic rabbits. I honestly can't believe how anyone could be that stupid as to dump the rabbits in the middle of a huge storm .. but they did. The bunnies seemed perfectly fine with their new found freedom and diligently avoided being captured.

I was back at the crack of dawn this morning to make another try for the rabbits .. it wasn't happening. I will have to go back tomorrow with an X-pen and see if I can lure them into the pen and then just pick them up. Still, all was not lost .. some little kids .. toddlers really .. were chasing the birds at the front of the park, and I noticed a Coot that couldn't even begin to get up and get away from the kids. I was able to catch it by tossing my coat over him and just picking him up. I was promptly rewarded by a very large Coot poop being released all over me and the usual Coot posturing of "I am going to kill you".

Off we went to the Wetlands & Wildlife Center and got the Coot duly checked in and cared for.

Returned home to more rain and then got a call about a cockatiel who had been attacked by a hawk .. that poor baby arrived around 6 PM this evening and has very substantial puncture wounds in the wing pit of both wings. Still, it managed to bite me soundly during the exam, but is now quietly
resting in a nice, warm little container. I really hope this little 'tiel will be OK .. both wings had been clipped, so it had really no chance to escape the hawk. It was lucky to have found its way into the back yard of the kindly lady who happened to see the attack and who intervened and got the 'tiel to me.

Just another day ..

Terry

Wow Terry your a busy lady. Ya know if God didn't think you couldn't do it then you wouldn't have all your rescues Whats a little Coot Poop right? Hey maybe his way of saying Thanks My husband will say "Hey Cindy that bird just pooped on ya" all I say is looks like I have been Baptized again huh? I would love to see a Coot up close they are pretty. Crappy weather there I know but not much better here in Michigan. One minute it is snowing and you freeze and the next like today high is 56F everything is melting and they are worrying about flooding now. Yuk I really don't care for Michigan weather too much at least in the Winter, too cold for my blood. The rest of the year is it beautiful. Good Luck Terry you do a totally Awesome job

I'm so sorry you have had SO much rain, and I hope it lets up. Thank you for continuing your work thru the rain. I hope you are able to capture the rabbits, and I hope the cockatiel survives the ordeal.

NEVER MIND pics, you have more important things to tend to. Thanks again for sharing.

Sounds like an Oregon kind of weather day!
Good luck with the rabbits. Some years back several were dumped at a golf course here. It wasn't very long before they had multiplied into numbers which required them to compete for food and many were starving. It took a huge rescue effort to remedy the situation and save the rabbits. From that effort, the House Rabbit Association was born.

Hi Terry,

Yikes, what day or two you have had. I'm growing webs between my toes here and have to squish my way out to the loft. Otherwise all is well and it was not half as bad as was predicted. I think you got much more rain than we did. Hope it lets up today, it seems to be moving on. How about y' all in Phoenix? Are you getting rain yet? It was headed your way.

Terry

Many of us who rehab get a breather during the winter months but I don't think you ever do. I have told you many times that I think you are the greatest and mean it sincerely.

Good luck with the wascally wabbits and I hope the little tiel makes a quick recovery. Poor little guy, it is a miracle the hawk didn't kill him. Hope the little coot does well too.

I think there are a couple of songs with the "never rains in southern California", but my favorite is by my favorite singer Julio Iglesia. This is the link to the lyrics. Looks like you can play it too but I can't tell if it is one you have to pay for or not???? It also happens to be my favorite song by Julio.

Thanks for having a read, everyone! I'm very sad to report that the cockatiel died around 10 PM last night. The puncture wounds were very, very large and deep. Poor little thing.

No luck with the rabbits this morning .. couldn't even find them .. BUT .. there is a gull with a plastic grocery bag wrapped around one leg that is having a very hard time of it. It wouldn't come close enough to the edge to be caught, but I'm hoping it will be tired enough to allow some help later today. Obviously the bag is full of water and is so heavy that the gull won't be able to get out of the water unless it is smart enough to make its way to the spillway and try to walk out.

More later and maybe even some pics sometime today.

Terry,

I wish that I lived a little closer to you. I remember when I use to try to gather dumped bunnies. A X pin will work if you have alot of time. But you may have to put traps out at night with all of their favorite veggies in them.

Is that something that could even be done in your situation?

Those little bunnies are so curious, when I would set a cage down, it would only take minutes before they were all around it checking it out to see what it is.

On the other hand, with the traps...I would catch all kinds of critters, but would eventually get the bunnies.

You are my hero Terry!

When I read about the heavy CA rains, my first thought was "YIKES! I hope our members are OK!!"

I often worry when a catastrophe hits a member area and then wonder, how would we know if they are SAFE??? We can only wait, hope, worry and gnaw fingernails!

Yes, we are getting rain but no thunder and lightning. So far, we had rain day before yesterday and today. There will be rain, then sun, then rain, then overcast...skies look like they might be clearing!

One thing about our Valley of the Sun is getting bad weather in one section and not in another...never ceases to amaze me! My daughter, who lives about an hour away on the other side of Phoenix will ask me how I liked the Thunderstorm...I'll reply, "WHAT Thunderstorm? We had sun!!"

Terry, I hope those bun buns will be OK! Hope the bag can be removed! I am also very sorry and shocked to hear about the 'Tiel! I thought SURE he would be OK !!

Will send SUN and DRY to help!! Will be watching for updates!

Love, Hugs and Scritches to ALL

Oh, poor little teil.....so sorry it died.....how does a teil get attacked by a hawk? I would assume it was in a cage. I know if Walley sees a hawk, he has this little chirp that he does and if it gets to close to the house, he goes beserk in his cage and if he's out of his cage and sees one.......well, that ain't pretty. It's funny how he knows the difference in a hawk and a crow or buzzard.......
