AGSG Pigeon found

Hello!
I had a pigeon arrive at my house in Michigan with a black AGSG band on it's right leg. We fed it since we have chickens and had appropriate food available. It has been 9 days. Unfortunately, it has decided to live on top of the freezer on our porch. I didn't capture the bird, but i got all the numbers off it's black band. It has a white band on it's left foot that does not appear to be numbered. The bird seems okay, except for never leaving the porch. It even flew in the house for a minute. Is there a way to contact the bird's owner via the band numbers? We can get the bird in a cage, I am sure.

Deee....thank you for contacting us about the pigeon. Please read this link:

This is where the bird came from and bottom line is the bird has no owner and no where to call home.
It would be best for you to capture and cage the bird then let us help you find someone willing to adopt it.
Out in the wild is not where it belongs and with winter coming fast, it probably wouldn't survive.

Well, it seems that the complete article isn't there. The story on these birds is a very sad one. Most people were told to either kill the birds or just turn them loose. Every once in a while someone finds one that has managed to survive.
I'm sure that we can find someone to take the bird once you capture it. Others will be along shortly. I"m on my way to the dentist.......

Thank you! Will be in touch soon

Thank you for your reply. I will discuss this with the rest of the household. All of our pets were unwanted and taken in over the years. There is a barn with some sheep that might be acceptable for the pigeon to live in....big enough to have it's own entrance. I know nothing of the care of a pigeon, except that it eats corn and sunflower seeds, millet and water. It isn't my descision, as to whether or not the bird will stay or go. I am just the one with computer skills so that's why I am on line about this. Is there a good adoption program? I wouldn't want the little bird to be killed when it can probably join the farm. Can you tell me where to learn about pigeon care in the winter? It may frost tonight here. The pigeon is sheltered on our porch. It is friendly and likes to look in the house through the windows. I don't want to cage him unless he's going somewhere....
I check emails at the library, so if I don't get back to you immediately, that is why.
Thank you again! Blessings

Believe me, caging the bird until something can be worked out is in the best interest of the bird. He's come to you for a reason. They are used to being taken care of by humans and he apparently knows that you will take care of him. It would be very sad to have a hawk, or cat or owl (at night) get this poor bird.
We've got members all over the US and the world for that matter. If we know where you are and who's close to you, we can probably get someone to adopt the bird. No one here is going to kill him. THAT I can promise you. IF however you decide to let him stay there, the barn may be an option at some point, but he would need to be kept in the barn for a few weeks in order to "learn" that the barn is home now.
Just let us know your decision, and we can go from there. As far as the cold, they can withstand extreme tempatures as long as they are healthy and well fed.

What does the adoption process involve?

I discussed the options with everyone and we would like to have it adopted.
My friend raised pigeons once but doen't want more birds and since pigeons are social, it would be cruel to keep the poor bird isolated. We are in Rochester Hills, Michigan and are not rolling in extra cash. I need a phone number or web site to refer the person handling this matter to. Any ideas?

The best thing to do is give the person who has the bird this web site address. They can post the bird in the adoption section, along with a picture if possible.
