Found AGSG pigeon-Western NY

I am not a pigeon person, I joined specifically only because of the bird in our poolhouse with an AGSG band. From reading this forum I take it that it does not have a home to return to- I am putting this feeler out there to see if anyone in my area (sherman, NY, near Jamestown NY and Erie,OH) is able to take in this bird or suggest a way to help it, please see my post in the other thread in this category for more- thank you for any help, please tell me if I am mistaken in thinking this bird has no home to go back to! I would appreciate any answers, as it will surely perish here. Patty

Patty...you may not be a pigeon person but you are kind to have posted and want to find help for the bird. Is there a way you can catch the bird and put it in a cage or a dog or cat kennel ...with food and water? It's easier for us to find someone to take the bird if it is contained.

thanks, we haven't really tried to catch it yet, it is up about 8 feet up on top of a section over the water heater/electric enclosure inside the building, not a real ceiling, but just framed in wood slats. the space is only about 3 feet high so we can't really get up in there. We thought of it had blown off course so we fed it and let it rest but now I know he has no home, what can I do next? I have to stand on a chair to reach a wood piece where we placed water and food. I'm scared he thinks this is home now since he came back to it. Please advise me! thanks

With this bird not having a home, AND, most likely being a breed that doesn't really have a homing instinct to begin with, you're probably right. He's apparently found a way to survive, (thanks to you) and has no intentions of going anywhere else.
Like the others have said, there isn't anything anyone can do as long as the bird is loose.
You're best bet on catching him is either set up a trap, remove the food and water and let him get a bit hungry. Put the food in the trap and try to catch him that way. A pet carrier or cage of some sort might work, or you could use this trap. http://www.racingbirds.com/ptrap.html
The other way is to grab him after dark. He won't fly away in the dark as long as you get a good handle on him. He'll never see you coming.
It's very sad what is happening to these birds and people like you are they're only chance now. Once captured, we'll do our best to help you find someone to take him and give him a home.

thank you- i just went to check on him, and someone else had chased him out of the poolhouse and closed access to return- he is flying in circles and hasn't left yet- i think he will hang around here though and as soon as someone leaves the door open he will go back in. we'll see. I will try to catch him tonight if he does- this is a public campground, with alot of people using the pool....I leave in just a few days, and have no way to adopt him, being a full time rv'er. thanks for your replies.

Not being nosy,....just thinking "out loud"...........do you know where you'll be going when you leave this camp ground? We've got members all over the US, but sometimes we don't have one where a particular bird shows up. It might be that in your travels, you got by or close to someone here that would be willing to take the bird. Just a thought..........

i am going to annapolis, md from here- the bird is sitting in a tree near the poolhouse for the last 2 hours without moving. If he comes in again I will try to catch him. I have two parakeets free flying in my rv, my boyfriend isn't anxious to commit to taking in a pigeon, but i'll see what happens, someone here in the camp has an African grey, maybe she has some ideas on what to to with him if i get him! thank you for your help, i'll post again with any updates. patty

If you are going from western NY to Maryland .... you will be ''passing'' a lot of members. Perhaps your bf would be more receptive to taking the pigeon for a ride if he knew it was a one way trip to a positive adoption. Lovebirds can help you contact members from her resources. ...... do try to contain this pijie as he probably won't last long on his own.

Ok Members......here's a map of where this bird is and where Patty is going. I don't know that they'll take this specific route. Maybe they drive the back roads....anyway, everyone can get an idea of what they might possibly be close to in their travels.
