Dear fellow members, today I spoke to Dr.Jonathan Leshanski,DMV,from New York City.
He says he will try to do acupuncture on my disabled pigeon (see my posting of 04/08/01,Lost&Found section)but he's very expensive. One session is $225! I don't have too much money but I think I'm going to give it a try. Is anyone willing to help Ouch,my pigeon's name, financially? Thank you! Dr's website is in case someone needs to check. This is not a scam! Is just what Ouch's vet said,'a sad case".
If memory serves, acupuncture involves the rerouting of the body's energy pathways to promote healing. And if memory serves, these energy pathways were mapped over a vast period, by practitioners in China.
Am I to understand that these pathways have been mapped for a pigeon? Wow! I know acupuncture can be of enormous help in some cases--but on a pigeon? Really, WOW!
I do NOT mean to disparage your doctor in any way. Would he consider taking this little
patient as a research case?
I will promptly forward this "case" to another site for the purpose securing information on additional conventional treatment.
If this is a spinal cord trauma, permanent paralysis IS a possibility you & Ouch may have to face.
I've heard of one case of chiropractic treatment being successfully performed on a bird after an impact with a window. Have you looked at this alternative?
Since Ouch's life is not immediately threatened, why not see what we can turn up?
This is only my common sense opinion. Please understand that I HAVE NO MEDICAL EXPERTISE, conventional or otherwise, to fall back on.
I have had many acupuncture sessions for my pains. The cost is usually about 30.00
I am wondering why you have been quoted 225.00. Did you seek a second opinion?
Have you looked into what 225.00 will get you with a certified vet.?
Just wondering.
Having a pigeon with the same problem, I can
certainly identify with the person caring for Ouch.
It is heartbreaking to see them go through day
after day of struggling to stand and properly use
their legs.
As to the acupuncture, my vet is a also licensed
acupuncturist for humans and totally believes
in its effectiveness. He has used acupuncture on
several occasions on domestic ducks that had
paralysis problems. In a couple of cases in did
seem to help and in others, I noted no change.
So, I guess the jury is still out on acupuncture
for me.
I do feel the vet in NY is asking a very high price for
this service especially if he has no experience with
pigeons.
Before you go jumping into this please consider this. Once a pigeon has been critically sick it is very hard to get better again. I am not talking about better as top bird i am talking about i will doubt if it will ever be able to fly any it will probally die after the trama of treatment. I has been My experience to "let go of" these birds. With all the money that you spend on this on bird you could buy some VERY NICE rollers or show birds. It is good that you are enjoying pigeons But you will probally be dissapointed with all the money you spend just to have a sickly bird around.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm
sorry but, as long as there's little hope to recover, I'm not going to let Ouch 'of'. If he's not going to recover 100% I might send him to retire at Bird Paradise Sanctuary in upstate New York.
And you know Peter, money's not everything in this world...
When I was much younger, I trained seriously in Tae Kwon Do. My Master Instructor eventually semi-retired and the last I heard, practices acupuncture. He had a Ph.D, when he trained me. He also had a heart. He was always very good to me.
Why not try martial arts schools for referrals for reasonable acupuncture? The style need not be Chinese. Tae Kwon Do is Korean. Ask for the Master Instructor and request that he/she consult their resources
for reasonably priced acupuncture.
The direct appraoach always works best with these people. Just use much deference and never interrupt a class or activity--wait.
I have a hunch they can hook you up, if you want to pursue this.
Constantin,
Why would you spend so much money on a stock pigeon in the hopes of making its quality of life better unless you love life so much that you care only about the little bird's improvement, and not about its value in the sport of pigeon raising? I think I know where you are comming from and would be happy to donate $10.00 to the cause. Please post your address. Hope there is time for Ouch.
I like pigeons but I'm not into raising racing pigeons. I just help the sick and the injured ones. I don't have too much knowledge, that's why I go with them to the vet. Thank you for your help but please don't send any money right now, I'm still exploring
other less expensive options.
