Late to hatch...

Ok, i have a couple of questions, totally unrelated but i'll post both here. First i have 2 pairs that have been on eggs for the past 19 days and no babies as of yet. Is it time to be concerned? After checking them today i noticed one was significantly cracked or chiped away at and i was for sure it was going to hatch but when i checked tonite...no change.
Second question is what kind of rules do most cities have as to keeping pigeons? Im sure it varies from place to place but i noticed Ray you said you were unable to keep pigeons despite the fact you own a house.
What about a small loft with only a few pigeons? The reason im a little concerned is because im about to get new neighbors on either side of me. One couple went to a nursing home and the other needs a larger house. Both of which seemed to like my pigeons and were interested in them but you never know about new people. I just hope all turns out well.

See ya

Joel:

Have you heard the term "candle"? It refers to holding an egg up to bright light to see if an embryo is present. At this point the egg should be filled with squabbie. Early on you would see perhaps, a dark mass and veins in the light. The eggs should hatch any time now, if they're fertile and alive.
Also, pigeons lay two eggs, but don't set them until the second one is laid. When the pigeons begin setting after the second egg is laid, the temperature is reset in the egg and the life cycle starts. It is from that point that you start counting. Subtracting two days from your 19, puts them due at any time, if they're fertile...

If you do handle the eggs, put them back in the same position.

As for your pigeon loft, I would not worry.
Often in life, we just have to wait and see.
And often in life, the things we worry about never happen.

I don't see anybody complaining about a few birds.

I was talking about a full blown loft. Even so, I may get away with it, if I tried. But local ordinances do prohibit it here. And I can see why--somebody else would erect a kennel and we'd listen to dogs bark day & night.

I have had the same situation with my Jacobins. They lay the eggs but then abondon them after what appears frustration from them that the eggs don't hatch. Ray n Judy, can it be that they get upset when we check on the eggs while they sit and incubate them?
