Dying young:

Hey, I'm new to this and I was wondering if I could please get some advice? I have five hens to hatch babies and each one threw the smallest chick out to die. Any idea why?

For me this usually happens within a week, they will start to favor the strongest chick and the weak one usually ends up dying. With some of my pigeons it was because they were having to compete for food from the others in the loft, I have one pair that will let one perish with food in the box 24/7. With that pair, I usually remove the strongest chick for the first half of the day and they will feed the weaker one.

That's how I've gotten around it.

Never had that happen. Do you leave food for the parents to feed 24/7? Or put food in their box? Sounds as though not enough food to feed both. Were they thrown out of the box before they died? Or could they have died and then been thrown out?
