Question

chicken with a cold

I have a red hen that is exhibiting symptoms of what could be a cold . I noticed she had been sneezing but today she has a cough and she sounds very " mucousy "

I know there are a lot of members here that have chickens also and I was wondering if anyone has / had observed something similar and if they could help me with a remedy or advise accordingly . I've had pigeons exhibit these same symptoms and baytril has worked wonderfully and cleared the problem in the past .

Whether I am right or wrong for doing so I've tried to act quick and have soaked bread pieces in BAYTRIL approximately 5ml 2 x a day . Syringing was not working and I was wasting more than was going down her throat.

I love her dearly and I would miss her terribly if anything were to happen to her .

EEK! that baytril sounds like a lot to me. Can you tell me how much your hen weighs or the breed of hen and the concentration of baytril you have? I think we can get her on a more appropriate.

Hello Charis

All I have on the front of the packaging is " 25 mg/ ml ENROFLAXACIN " it is a 100ml container . She is a Rhode Island Red , possibly a x . I have nothing to weigh her with , but she is a good size and a fatty

I only started her on the baytril this morning , so no probs reducing it . She is still eating ok and resting more than usual except for this flemmy cough she has .

Okay...that's just what I wanted.
For my Rhode Island Red, my vet prescribed at 22.7 mg pill. So if you were to give your girl,1 ml[cc], 1 time a day for 10 days... that would be within the range. Were she here, I would give the 1 ml directly down her throat.
Good luck. I'll be expecting to here the best about her recovery.

Charis ..........thank you again

I might be able to manage the 1 ml down her throat seeing they are a very slim syringe.....I will give that a go tomorrow morning .

I will keep you posted on her progress
