emergency : Air Sac Injury

I have a Robin .. not quite fledging but almost . Doesn't have his flight feathers yet. Neighbor brought him to me and said it had fallen out of tree she's guessing and she said a cat had it in its mouth..which she got the cat to drop it. She checked all over for injuries and didn't find any . I too have checked and rechecked.

OK problem.. Air Sac Injury, the bird reminds me of a balloon (more like an adult item blown up) Avarian vet is out of town - we only have 1. This baby needs to be able to lay down instead of sitting straight up on its tail.

I've been reading /watching
http://www.pigeonrescue.co.uk/rupturedairsac.htm

how to poke a hole.. don't know if i feel that comfortable but gotta do something.. help?

Sterilize a needle and make the hole. You really, really need to do this. Just make sure you are making a small hole/rip in the outer skin. Then drain off the air with gentle pressure from your fingers. You may need to do this several times before it resolves.

We just did it, and talk about a happy bird.. poor thing was all air. I'll be up most night so will be watching him. Hopefully he'll heal quick.

Thank you for relieving the pressure on this little bird! You may have to do it again a time or two.

I spent 30 years rescuing animals that needed me.. first to ever have one with air duct issues.. not sure if it was from fall, or cat or what but I'm prepared if he or she needs it again. Course right now he's happy to be able to sit properly and eat.

He doesn't appear to have any injuries -skin breaks , and other than air duct problem, no other injuries , he's lively, hungry and lively and hungry lol Even when puffed up he was lively and hungry. Bt more so since the air was released.

Appears to be a slow "leak" he was fine up til 2 hrs ago and so we're about to let the air out of Pip again. This time before he swells up with air so much he sits on his tail.

Also feeding him Bird Formula and 1/2 drop of bayril to keep infections down.
Pip has a very healthy appietite .. about 2-3 hrs intervals.

If a cat had him in his mouth then he should be started on antibiotic. A tiny puncture from a cat may not even show, but could be deadly.

yes that's why i started him on bayril or however its spelled.

If an air bubble is small.. and doesn't appear to be getting any bigger , can that one be left alone?

Yes it can. As long as it isn't interfering with his breathing, it will heal on it's own.
