Injured pidgeon or dove

We rescued a large bird that had been hit by a car and left. Its gray and white with blue and purple aroung the neck. His chest is injured and was bloody and he cannot hold his head up. We have been feeding him mashed banana with honey and water mixed in thru a syringe. He takes it well, but he can't hold his head up. Will not take seed yet, but shows interest. We have had him for 3 days an we keep him in a warm area in a box. The wound is right on the area that protrudes where the heart would be. I have called so many wild life org. and no one will help or even call me back. He's a lovely sweet bird and I so want to help him recuperate. Any thoughts will be so welcomed. I'm located in Gettysburg PA.

He needs antibiotics, anti inflammatories and supportive care. If wildlife rehabs won’t help, you’ll need to find an avian vet.

Bird formula will be much more beneficial than whatever concoction you’re using. You have to be carful with any fluid given by mouth if he can’t hold his head up. If he’s positioned wrong he will aspirate.

If he is a pigeon , they are not considered wildlife, as they are not native.

If the bird is still living, you would have to take responsibility of him as your pet pigeon, and take to an avian Veterinarian, if possible, or a vet that will treat avians.

Thank you for rescuing the bird. Please contact an avian vet or wildlife rehabber and ask about a pigeon friendly vet or rescue near you. There are some places on google you may want to contact for a referral.

Pigeons are tough. Please do not just surrender the bird to anyone. Our first pet pigeon was a critically injured feral, Phoebe. She was nearly decapitated and had a broken wing from flying into a fan and our local “ rescue” was going to euthanize her because she was “ just a pigeon.” We took her to an exotic vet who stitched her up. She became a happy healthy bird and was our dearest love for eight years.
