Hi,

We really need some help please. We found a baby pigeon on our driveway around 5 weeks ago. We noticed that one of its set of claws was bent backwards so he hobbles when he walks. We managed to catch him and put him in our backgarden where he has happily stayed since with daily visits from its mum so she can feed him. He has attempted short flights around the garden but has not managed to fly out of the garden as of yet. We have seen him drinking and pecking at the floor but just seems to pick up stones instead of the seed we have put down for him. Over the last few days we have noticed that he has stopped coming out in the garden as much and has started to loose weight. I have seen his mother feeding him this morning but he is certainly not being fed enough. How can we help him as he seems to have very little energy and we are worried that hes not getting the amount of food he requires. I have attached a photo if anyone can advise roughly how old he is? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks for helping out this bird.
He's cute...!:)
When babies reach this age, parent birds usually start to mate to start over again. At this age mother won't feed the baby as she is conserving for her reserves to lay again. Its the father who feeds the young till weaning. The bird is about to wean so dad has stopped feeding him or he will feed him only once a day to encourage him to eat on his own out of hunger. He would have weaned already if he weren't kinda handicapp. Is there seem to be any injury healed in wrong place on feet or are they just bent? Can he use his wings properly?
If he's getting thin I think you must intervene and hand feed him so that he don't get weak. When he gets his strength back he will probably be ready for wild if you don't socialise with him much. If his wings are absolutely fine he will live in the wild with his bad feet with little problem.

there will only be a few days before he is eating well and weaned. they all have to go through it and this one is no different. he does not look in trouble to me. a parent bird is still feeding and he is picking things up that means it is going as nauture intended. we humans tend to interfear and do more harm than good most times.
