I have chickens :) So I'm guessing that means a rooster and a hen? You don't need roosters for eggs, by the way. In the future you may also want to get a couple more hens for the rooster that way all his beating isn't focused on one hen. Well, WE typically try to keep it 3 hens per rooster. As long as you don't end up with more roosters than hens all should be okay :)
sorry becky i mean two hens and where will i be able to get them as i am 15 so finding transport is ahard
Ah, okay :) Just making sure. I have no idea where you'd get them. Surely we've got some members that could help you out. Our state has this classifieds paper called the Agricultural Review, that comes out every month. They've got a poultry section, so it's always easy for me to find people around here with birds. Everyone needs something like that where they live, so it'd make life easier :p
Hi James,

How about giving an ex-battery hen a free range retirement?

I picked up a sick collared dove from someone that had some rescued battery hens and she gave me a box of their eggs.

hi cynthia
i will try a get some ex battery hens for a free range retirement after reading about it
Please keep in mind, that there is quite a lot to keeping chickens. They need to be protected from predators, kept dry and given greens to suppliment pellets or cracked corn. They get sick and need to go to the vet and it can be expensive. All this said...chickens are charming creatures and entertaining companions. They know their names and will come when you call them. I've never met two that are a like, personality wise. You owe that to you and the hens.
Research, read and find out what you're getting yourself in for first.

Well said!! We should make the above paragraph a Chicken Stickie. :p Rescued hens would be great, of course you probably know you should not keep them with your pigeons. Good luck!
www.backyardchickens.com Lots of info and pictures. Might find someone there to help you :)
Chickens are great! Just remember a chicken will not fly away like a pigeon. Also, do not keep your chickens in the same building as your pigeons. I like the idea of adopting some old battery hens. If you have any other pets (Dogs, cats) make sure they are not left alone with the birds until you are positive they will be safe.
Smaller chicken breeds, like the bantaams are usually able to fly.
