American fans can have what I suppose could be called a staggering walk when they are strutting their stuff. Does she have her head held back into her tail feathers with her breast pointed upwards while she is "staggering"? And fans are not the best flyers to begin with.

And Pigeon Girl was asking if the bird was puffing up it's feathers, which could be a sign that an egg could be stuck.

Hi lissa, Is she stumbling when she walks? I had 1 young fantail start to stagger and fall over when he walked last fall. He was eating and drinking fine. He would literally do a somersault when he tried to walk! I talked to my boss and he said it sounded like some sort of 'toxin'......maybe a bad piece of seed or picked something up in the loft and ate it. (a toxin will make them act 'drunk' he said) I isolated him inside and gave him SMZ-TMP for 7 days. After about the 4th day of treatment, he was more stable on his feet and by the 7th day he was back to normal and back in the loft.
As you know, American Fantails 'shimmer' but they shouldn't stagger. Although, I do have one older hen with such a bad tail set (umbrella tail- rests on her back and over her head), then when she runs she spreads her wings out for balance (plowing thru everybody!), if not she'll fall over
Her feathers aren't puffed up at all? I would keep her isolated and start some antibiotics. Do you have any?

I got a prescription at work (vet) for it. Do you have a vet that will call in a rx for you? It's 'SMZ-TMP 200-40/5 suspension'. The dose is .25ml orally once a day for 10 days.

...was scratching my head on the SMZ stuff...that was a new one to me !

But it's Trimeth Sulpha (common name)...sometimes called Triple Sulpha...and it's also available online Foy's or Jedd's, no prescription.

If the vet cannot get you some quick....call Foys (east coast)

...or Jedd's (west coast) and have them overnight some....except with the Jedds you are gonna have to up the dosage to a syringe-based dose, instead of just a drinking-water based dose.

NE Pigeon Supply also has it, but again you can call and ask if they have any which is not drinking-water delivered.

This is the one I have, which needs a prescription.........I don't know why-
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole or co-trimoxazole (abbreviated SXT, TMP-SMX, TMP-SMZ or TMP-sulfa) is a sulfonamide antibiotic combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole,

$4.00 is a great deal! Think it just depends on where you buy it. Lots of things you can get online without a script.
