Hi guys and gals, just wondering how many feather tails does pigeon has?

In relation to cutting the 9th and 10th primary wing of the pigeon so that it can be raced with complete wings, how about the feather tail? How do you cut/pull them in order to have a complete feather tail when you race the pigeon?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Homers typically have 12 tail feathers. Cutting or pulling tail feathers is not necessary for racing. As long as no more than one or two tail feathers are missing, then the bird should handle it okay. It's when they have large gaps (typically from attacks) that really hurt them.

Pulling tail feathers will start a moult if done at the wrong time. I would be very careful if you decide to go this route. Check Jack Barkel's video for more info on pulling tail feathers and moulting.
