I have no clue, but it's cute. You can just pick it up? Someone will answer in a bit. I tried looking for what kind it is, but I'm pretty dumb if it's ain't a pigeon, and I don't even know what to look for. Sorry.
LEAVE IT ALONE! it will be fine outside just make sure you keep your pets away from it!
the parents will feed it on the ground. IT IS A MYTH that "if you touch a baby bird the mother would smell you and leave the baby alone."! most bird's sense of smell is vrey weak! This bird will do fine. It is a fledgling, it is still learning how to fly.
It's a fledgling Mockingbird. If the parents are around, please just leave it alone and let the parents care for it and keep an eye out to be sure all is well. For sure, the little bird in the picture doesn't need to be rescued .. it just needs to finish growing up.
Absolutely no reason to feel dumb. You DID try, and that's appreciated! I often get in little birds that I have no clue what they are and try to determine the best food by the beak .. granivore, insectivore, etc. Then, I hotfoot it to whichever local rehabber takes that kind of bird!
The problem is that if there is a cat and that bird can't fly, it is a sitting duck. Maybe you can put it higher?
