Found a fledgling (?) mourning dove in my backyard, small injury on its back, looks to be healing. Couldn't fly well, but wings look fine. Unfortunately there are many Stray Cats in the area, and although it doesn't look like a bite on its back, if it can't be somewhere safely I am afraid it's going to become prey to one of them. Have successfully captured it, have it in a secure area and box, it is clearly not very mature. Looks to have all of its feathers on a cursory look, but upon inspection lots of the bony, white immature/unformed feathers underneath. It's been about 4 hours since it was discovered, have put out finch seed and a shallow bowl of water, with no success. Tried to grind up a little bit of the seed and add to water, fed with a syringe, aND it feverishly gulped it down! I'm pretty sure it's just very young & not 100% flying & eating on its own. I live in San leandro, California (oakland area) and haven't had much success with finding places to help. Any advice GREATLY APPRECIATED! Have photos if it will help identify age/needs. Thanks in advance!
