Hi everyone

We found this injured near a shopping mall carpark, we have no experience in rescuing birds whatsoever, please advise how we should help she/him馃檹

Have you secured him in a box with seeds and water? He was definitely attacked by a predator and will need antibiotics. Cat saliva is deadly for pigeons and the infection will eventually kill him.

What country are you from? Will you be able to get an amoxycillin based meds like Betamox 500 mg amoxycillin?

Hi Marina
We are in Singapore, I don鈥檛 think we can get amoxicillin without prescription:(( we will get a box and bring home first, any product we should use on him/her?

You can rinse the wounds with saline water and cover with an antibiotic cream like bactroban. Ask amongst your friends and family if they have any leftover antibiotics. Synulox will also work. Human meds can be given to pigeons.

Thank you so much for your advice Marina!
About dosage, how much antibiotics do you recommend us to feed her per day? We will keep you updated once we rescue her successfully. Appreciate your help馃檹

We managed to find some antibiotic pills, how much should we give him/her each day?

And we managed to bring him/her back home, the little thing still got a lot of fight in him/herself馃挭 drank some water and jumped out of the temporary box that we set up and walked to the corner of our garden

For an adult pigeon 40 mg twice a day. You can crush the whole tablet and split the powder into heaps of 40 mg. Take a small piece of wet bread, soak up all the powder and put deep inside the beak over the tongue for him to swallow.

Thanks to your advice Marina, he ate the wet bread with medicine and some bird mix in the morning. We named him Conan馃惁

He was quite jumpy when we tried to hold him so we have yet to apply any antiseptic cream for him, any suggestions on how to calm him down or gain his trust faster? Much appreciated馃檹

Throw a lightweight towel over him so that the head is covered. It will calm him down and make it easier to treat him. Just a reminder, only give bread when you are giving the meds. Let him eat seeds during the day. Too much bread is not good for them.

I noticed that his left leg is curled up, but he seems a lot better than yesterday and has been walking around quite a bit. Noted your advice Marina, thanks, we only feed him 1 or 2 small pieces of bread when giving medicine, we bought this bird mix for him as food.

His appetite is significantly better and can wobble around with both feet now.

But his poo comes in eggshell white, yellow, orange, green all sorts of colours, is this normal? Should we be concerned?

He was probably starving when found. Starvation droppings are green and creamy. The brown droppings in the left of the photo looks much better. Hopefully it will improve over the next couple of days with proper feeding. You can add some supermarket food to his mixture: whole popcorn kernels, dry brown lentils and dry peas.

Hi Marina

Conan has been eating well for the last two days, he can walk pretty fast with two feet now!

I noticed that he grooms a lot on his back where the feathers were torn off and underneath his injured wing

He will also spread his wings and shake them for a little like this馃憞

I was wondering if there would be parasites or mites on him? Is he recovering well in your professional opinion? Is there anything else that you recommend us to do to help him heal faster?
Appreciate your advice馃檹

It's probably itching where the new feathers are regrowing. He looks well. If he is eating well and droppings are brown and firm with a white dot on top, then no need for concern. You can wait till afer antibiotic treatment and then get something from a petshop for external parasites. Easiest will be to get a product that you put one or two drops between the shoulderblades. It's normal for pigeons to shake their feathers like that.

Hi Marina, wish you well馃挄

We made Conan a house but he doesn鈥檛 really go inside. I鈥檓 afraid that he will catch cold sleeping on the ground at night, is there a specific setting that he will be more comfortable sleep in/on?

Is he safe in that spot? No predator like a cat that can get inside? They like to perch on something. You can put a large branch inside. One that curves so that he can climb a bit higher.

Provide him with a large dish of food so that he can eat as much as he wants to. Has he been trying to fly? Droppings are a bit watery, but if he has a good appetite then he is ok. You can also put some apple cider vinegar in his drinking water twice a week. 5 ml acv to 1 litre of water. Helps with digestion and keeping the good gut bacteria in place. Get acv with the "mother" not the filtered brand.

Conan is safe in my backyard, eating well and even attempted to fly from time to time. All thanks to your help, much appreciated.

Some of them are really orange鈥 other than that he seems to be a healthy boy

He is looking good. Color of the droppings will be determined by the food he is eating, as long as there is no blood. You can put apple cider vinegar in the drinking water twice a week to keep the good gut bacteria in place. 5 ml acv to 1 litre of water.

Happy new year to you as well! Lets hope we can save plenty of pigeons next year!
