I found this old article that shows one of the uniqueness of having a homing pigeon--homing!

Interesting article - thanks for sharing it! Pretty incredible for a bird that wasn't raced. Wonder if she was loft flown? And her father walked 60 miles to get home? Sure seem like valuable bloodlines!
awwww...what a great article. That poor pijie...who knows where or what she's been thru all that time just tryin to get home. I'm glad he's keeping her home forever this time.
Sorry, the bird did not walk sixty miles to get home, most likely some one found it, kept it prisoner for that long It either escaped, or was released, and got worn out close to home, and walked the last few hundred yards or so... Dave

Why do you have to always knock the wind in everyone's sail?....Lol!!!!:D:D
Just like the truth to be known...I do not believe the Bird walked 60 mile over ten years to get home JMHO:D Dave
Aw, c'mon Dave - never let truth get in the way of a good story! And what a beaut story - pigeon heroes indeed!

Dave, Dave, Dave............you didn't read it right. SHE didn't do the 60 mile walk. Her FATHER did........and sometimes when my birds get home from a race, it's so darn late that I would SWEAR they walked instead of flew........LOL

Boomerang's feats are all the more remarkable because she is not a racing bird.
The daughter of Bluey Champion, a winner of 17 national titles, she was kept for breeding.
She must have inherited her homing skills from her father, who was once 'birdnapped' and had his wings clipped by thieves, but escaped and walked 60 miles back to Mr Reardon's home.
I knew it was the father..... i do not believe the clipped wing part... unless it was 4 blocks over.. Dave
Do the math................. Dave
He caught the 396 bus, jumped on the el.Walked to 95th and a taxi to home. Duh
Sorry Brummie i forgot about the "EL" LOL! Dave:D:D:D:D
Well, when I sent the bird's across the channel. They would end up in Newfoundland.
Das boot.
Look, i like the story, but NO bird makes it home from 60 miles, after ten years with it's wings clipped. IF it escaped from pigeon thieves sixty miles away, and it took ten years to get back it's wings would have grown out...
It is more likely, that a local flyer had the bird as a prisoner, and the fool tried to settle it 1/2 mile or less away, and it came back from that distance.
I do not fault the bird for his guts or homing ability. just like to keep it real. Dave
Dave,
Reread the story. There are two stories in there. One is the Boomerang story. The other short one is the father. Boomerang became famous because after she was given to a friend in Spain, she flew back flying 1,200 miles. So the original owner decided to gave her to many different friends, but the bird kept on going back home. The last story where the original owner found her very exhausted, I believe is the last time she ever returned from an unknown place because the last person to have her died five years earlier. So I suppose the title was misleading. It was not like 10 years she disappeared, but rather it took 10 years back and forth of that the bird kept coming back--the longest missing was the five years one.

The other story is the father which was birdnapped with his wing clipped. Apparently there is another article that I haven't found where the author actually knew that the bird "walked" from 60 miles. I am supposing that a wing clipped bird can't fly so he has to walk. I don't know how the author found the 60 mile distance thing.

This is the story of the father. I still can't find the 60 miles thing. I found the 15 miles though. LOL!
