Is our sport in danger?

Although I don't have a RPD subscription, I was able to obtain older issues from a friend. And after reading many issues, I've noticed a reoccuring crisis situation. Many middle-aged fanciers have stated that they think the sport of competitive pigeon racing is fading fast. The recruitment of new and younger fanciers to replace the older ones that have passed on is not fast enough. In addition to that, the hobby/sport is relatively unknown, with large percentage of the general public not knowing what pigeon racing is.

As fellow fanciers, what other problems do you see and what can we do to help keep our beloved hobby/sport alive?

Our club has grown to about 30 members, old and young. Many of us are in our early 40s and have a few years left in the sport. A few younger members are getting interested in the sport. Locally it is prospering.

at 25 i'm the youngest member in our club most of them are in they're 60's or above and the thing they complain about the most is the price of good birds i just got started and i'm raising for my second yb season and the price of breeders was out of site how many people just starting out want to spend $1000 or more for a pair that will probably never produce anything worth flying
just my 2 cents

I think the price of feed and zoning laws dont help either
For me being 25 yrs old I think pigeon racing is to expensive you invest alot and get squat back. Its a sport you have to do for the sheer LOVE (which is me). To actually be get in to money you have to put tons of money in. Example Oneloft races why are they so much money? 100 perch fee than like another 300+ to sign the birds in after training.
Where is the average joes oneloft races? Plus zoning laws, an just places to actually build lofts disappeared. very hard to build a loft in the yard of a house your renting. Most owners dont want that in there yard.
But thats just some of the reason why I think its dying theres alot more.

I was able to address a near by club a week ago and I told the group of about 14 that this was just a hobby that you couldn't get rich racing pigeons . But to keep the sport alive we had to work together. Since 2006 our club that had 3 flyers now has doubled and should triple in YB's with 2 new member coming in this fall. The biggest problem with new members is cost and then when they loose birds . We have got to help each other. I would rather do shorter YB races in order for the new guys to have a few birds to fly in the spring. The youngest member is 15 and the oldest flyer is 75.;)
Barn pigeon, I agree 100% we need to help each other, This is my second year all the flyers in my club have help me in every way, and I don't mind returning the favor.
I think you could lower the cost by haveing a young bird and a old bird race at the same time on the same trailer two months a year. just my thoughts.
thats the ticket Renee!!!
Helping each other out
so far I have had only TWO people from my club reach out to me and give me a helping hand :(
a lot of the guys in my club are old sourpuss people :(
I think that also has a lot to do with why young people are not joining race clubs
some clubs dont make it where people want to join
If I would have followed my gut feeling after the first pigeon race club meeting I went to I would not still be a club member lol
but I figured im not there for those sourpuss people
im there to race my birds... have fun.. and maybe meet a few GOOD people and learn from them :)

LOL.......for some reason, all of the sudden people are getting me and Lovelace confused.........I didn't write the post you are talking about, although I DO agree 100%.
I did write a post but don't know what happened to it. That's actually the second time that has happened to me this morning.
Maybe I hit my head harder than I thought..........LOL:eek:
Well here we go again I can remember hearing the hobby is dying 40 years ago. I remember reading articals written in old magizines that go back to the 50's. Stop and think about this there are about 350 million people in the USA of these there about 20,000 that belong to the AU,IF,and the NPA there are many that do not belong but do raise pigeons, if you added these to the total, I dare say that we would be lucky to have 50,000. Now you can do the math but I can tell you the we are less then 1% of the people living in the USA and never was a large % in the first place. This thread was started in the Homing and Racing FORUM, now what I an about to say may upset some of you that race but the truth is that most of you look down at those that show birds and here is part of our problem. We must stick together as pigeon people when ordances are written it effect us all RACER and SHOWER. There have been some posts that spoke of the hi cost of race birds and this is true, but I can tell you that show people give birds to young people and these kids compete against their peers and when a youngster has a bird of good quility they are incourage to enter them against the adults Many of these young people leave the hobby as they get older and their intrests change. Many of these kids return to the hobby later when they have completed their education, and are married and own a home,by this time they are in there 50's what I am saying is plant the seed and when it grows it will come back to the hobby. ..GEORGE;)

Oh, don't worry... with the way the economy's going cell phones will probably go the way of the Dodo and carrier pigeons will be all that we have left for long distance messaging!

OH CRAP LOL
sorry Renee ROFL
honest mistake
I guess what I was trying to say was theres a need for more young people in the hobby.
Im 31 atm about to turn 32 this month
I am the youngest person in my club
what is going to happen to my club say 10 years from now if I am still a member and no young guys have joined in that time
will I be shipping my birds with just a few other guys?
not to sound mean or anything but a lot of the guys in my club probably wont be here in 10 years
just about every meeting I go to I hear about someone passign away recently :(
I agree with everything that has been said, also when it comes to racing pigeons there is the time factor. I started racing in my 20s no wife no kids a full time job with money to burn. Then had to stop for about 20 years, to much other stuff going on!Now i am back, but with a Wonderful Wife 2 teen age daughters in school full time job responabilties church ect..finding time to train and work with the birds is hard! I was out the door at 6:30 this morning to train a little so I could be at work by 7:30.I only do it because I was bit by the pigeon bug in my 20s.I think alot of people get out for` a while like me then come back when they are older. Jeff
the time it takes can be a huge factor with the time it takes to feed the breeders yb and ob team cleaning nests and perches as well as the rest of the loft it takes alot off time from my family but luckily i have a 2 1/2 year old son that loves the birds and is right they're with me all the time
im waiting for my "loft manager" to get older :)
my daughter turns 2 next month
I take her into the loft with me sometimes and she loves looking at the birds
when ever you say the word birdie she points towards the loft
even if she's in the house
she will go over towards the window that faces the loft and points
i have to watch my son he's not scared of anything and my birds are tame so alot of times when i turn around he'll have one in his hands and he's not always so gentle
LOL
my daughter is the same way
she likes to try and poke the eyes of any living animal
the dogs run when theysee her
we are working on that though and she is getting a bit better at petting "nice" :D
Good responses everyone. I think George put it best as we (racing pigeon guys) tend to get pigeon-holed (no pun intended) and exclude all other people who raise pigeons of other breeds. Would it be easier to get those fanciers to come over to our side of the fence?

Also, I do agree with the point that sometimes, pigeon people are introduced to pigeons at a young age. Many times, they "stray" away from pigeons for many years and return later (stray coming back home) to the hobby/sport.
