Until now I never had an issue with Magpies around the garden. In fact I do love them (despite them being a vicious predator) as I find them such fascinating birds.

However - now I am investing in a dovecote I am aware they may pose problems to my dove population - more so if they breed. Same with crows I guess as the squabs will be targeted.

So - is there any way to deter magpies (& crows) without upsetting the doves? I see some mentions of hanging various reflective things up in the garden but has this been proven & also will this bother the doves as the last thing I want to do is distress them whilst trying to actually protect them.

Anyone have any tips or tricks?

Build a predator proof aviary. You can not let fantails free fly like that, they will all get eaten very quickly.
