Merlin has conquered the odds and was successfully released yesterday morning!
After advice from fellow PT members to wait and see, and the vet's recommendation to remove the splint and see how he coped, I did just that and kept an eye on him. He started bending his toe less and less, until...

A couple of hours later he was taking a bath in the pedestrian precinct, close to my house
amd in the early evening he came by for dinner. He's the bluebar just above the centre of the picture, and in this video it's possible to see him walking about with no major problems.
