My pigeon is super picky

My pigeon Helios pretty much eats nothing but his seeds. he may sometimes try some dandelion leaves or the odd piece of cucumber, but he hardly touches the veggies I put out for him. Is there any way to remedy this??

Also, does anybody know if leg leashes are safe for pigeons? He's quite a jumpy little bird, so trying to put him in a harness will probably destroy the trust I've tried so hard to build with him.

Try spinach, my pigeons love them. What are leg leashes? Do you want to restrain his movement?

Great, I'll try spinach. I absolutely do not want to restrain him, I mean a leash that attaches to his leg ring so he can come outside with me, like a harness.
You can get a harnass that fastens on the back with a long leash specific made for pigeons. Much safer.
Mine love kale, the tiny bits off the heads off broccoli, savoy cabbage shredded up small - most things green but especially anything that is a brassica they genuinely like more than seeds! I also give them cucumber or courgette and small bits of pepper or carrot chopped super small, and I give them piles of weeds but they just pick at those rather than demolish them, so yours will probably go for cabbage things too 😊 oh and I put a hanging basket with petunias in my aviary for some general enrichment since they're non toxic - they decimated those in days 😅

Thanks for your reply! I've actually tried a bunch of the veggies you've said, but I will definitely be trying broccoli🤩
Hi TheBat,

It is nice that you have chosen a pigeon as a pet. They are full of surprises! Loads of fun! They make great and wonderful best friends and companions. I have had mine since he was a wee squab. About 20 days old, near as I could tell. He is now 8 months old. He does not like plant based foods, greens, fruits or veggies. But he will play with them till they are dead. He is a very picky eater. So much so I now mix his food as he doesn't care too much for feed store mixes. I buy grains, seeds and nuts from the grocery (mostly)or pigeon supply places. Poppy is a healthy, lively and a wise young cock. He has trained me well. He is very active and bossy. I feed him 3 tbs of grain am & pm. In the am I add pre/pro biotics daily. Along with grit, free choice. I also give him a multi vit/min to make up for what he could be lacking in his diet. But not too much as he eats a healthy variety of graines, seeds & nuts. Then 1 or 2 days a week organic ACV. I believe that covers his dietary needs.

In my opinion leg leashes are NOT safe for pigeons. Those leg rings are leg bands for identification only. They are not a collar like for a dog. You could damage his leg by attaching something like a leash.

Hope this helps with some information.

Take care and enjoy and love your pigeon. They are a BLAST & LOTS OF LAUGHTER & LOVE.
