Hi,

I went to bring my Pearl to the shower this morning and noticed blood at the top of her right wing. I cleaned it off well and she let me get a good look. It is a gash about 1/4 inch right between the wing and body. What could have caused this? She is in her hutch except when she comes in to shower and exercise. She can still flap and fly, but she is not as perky and lets me get hold of her pretty easily. Could a rodent have caused this?

Possibly, but it's more likely a cat or raccoon tried to grab her through the wire. What size wire is on your hutch? If bigger than 1/2" square, she's at risk. I learned this the hard way last year when raccoons killed a dove in one of my outdoor aviaries. It managed to grab him through sturdy 1/2" x 1" wire. If this was a cat, you should start her on the antibiotic Clavamox right away. Do you have an avian vet?
