Hi all

9 days have past since i vaccinated my birds against Pox.
Yesterday i handled about 40 of them and to my surprice only 3 had the Pox growth.

Whatv does this meen?
1.There immunity is to strong for the vaccine to take effect ?:D
2.The vaccine was of poor quality?

I purchased the vaccine from a reliable store and the expiry date is only in 2010.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Bezz,

I am presently waiting for the "new batch" from Maine Biological, supposedly to be released by the end of this month. Apparently there were some reported problems with the last batch. It wasn't taking. Most of the supply houses who still had stock of the last batch wouldn't sell it on account of this, so I'm just waiting it out. Is this the manufacturer of the vaccine you used?

If not, or if you've got the new batch then I don't know - did you use the feather pluck method or the three needles under the skin method? I've heard that works much better (more takes) than the feather plucking method (and is less stressful on the birds).

Curious to hear your reply... and anxious to vaccinate my birds!
:)

Yes i did the needle method.

Hi Bezz,

I would definitely try and contact the manufacturer of the vaccine then (and/or the distributor) and ask if anyone else has had a problem getting takes. Maybe you just got a bad batch, because what you describe is what people were saying about the bad batch from Maine Biological: very few if any takes.
I hope you are able to get a new bottle and that it works the second time around!

:)

I'm not an expert on Pox, but it sounds like the vaccine was ineffective, or something to your method, either way it needs to be redone.
