While people are finally becoming somewhat informed about the crisis facing the countless shelter dogs and cats needing homes, far fewer are aware of the pet bird crisis.

This is a post about Mickaboo's Cockatiel Crisis that I got published on Care2-

and this is a really good piece about the realities of pet birds produced by CBS News- http://www.cbsnews.com/video/sunday/?tag=bc (Look for "Bye Bye Birdie)

The Bye Bye Birdie video is heart breaking. This is a huge issue. The public has NO IDEA of what they are signing up for when they buy a pet store Parrot and the pet store doesn't tell them.
We had a bird shop in the Portland area that had a quality operation. Before anyone could take home a bird purchase, they had to go through a class on care. The shop also had a veterinary clinic and boarding. The staff was well trained and could answer questions in an educated way. It was a wonderful place but people didn't want to take the TIME...wanted to do it their own way and after a couple of years the place closed.
Thanks for posting this information.

Excellent video - should be required viewing and there should be a waiting period to reduce impulse buyers!

What a shame to lose such a wonderful resource!
