As long as it's been kept refridgerated, I will use a bottle from the previous year, but no longer than that. I don't usually have that enough left over anyway to keep it longer than 1 year. What's the expiration date on the bottle?
what age should someone do pmv, canker, pox shots?

One year, we PMV'd our YB's as we moved them to the YB loft. But normally, we do our vaccinations in June. We Pox and PMV at the same time. Two weeks later, we do the Paratyphoid. Keep in mind, that my youngsters are 5 to 6 months old. Pigeons CAN be vaccinated at a month old but no earlier than that.
I don`t vacinate for ANYTHING...Never have and never will....I do not have sick pigeons, and they are living to a ripe old age....Have had many birds live to be 14 to 18 years old..And they never been vacinated in all of their lives....When the PMV scurge was really high many years ago,I locked my young birds out of the loft all day...They had the PMV virus..They had the watery droppings, throwing up of the feed etc...I realized they NEEDED to BREATHE fresh air,not all the bad air from the droppings etc...
After two weeks, they were fine and healthy...Only lost one RCH..That`s it..My buddy and fellow club member lost 61...Another club member lost 47....They didn`t listen to me about locking them out all day...The loft all day gets plenty of time to DRY OUT,from all the bad droppings left all night by the birds...It was a simple remedy,to say the least...No medication was given to the birds..Only a few drops of clorox in the water...
All my breeders, got immune to the PMV,and I assume they pass this to the babies they are breeding, and they get some immunity also...I don`t know for sure,I`m only going by my birds....If you have to vacinate, listen to the folks above...They know more about vacinating then I do,that`s for sure....I do know that pigeons, going to the ONE LOFT RACES, get vacinated as soon as they arrive at the One Loft Managers loft.....Alamo

With all due respect, I disagree with your premise.

First of all, I don't think your method is sound, I think you have simply been lucky. I personally do not believe that your birds had PMV, or you would have experienced the same fate as your fellow fanciers who did have PMV. Your birds may very well have been sick, but not from PMV. A few drops of clorox in the water will not "cure" a bird infected with a virus, PMV or otherwise.

Everyone is entitled to believe, what they wish to believe. I am only responding to your post, because I consider your recommendation to be medical malpractice. I suspect that rather then your birds having PMV, they had a bacterial infection such as E Coli see: http://www.albertaclassic.net/chalmers1.php

Here is another resource: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/pigeons/

note they say...

"The best protection against this disease is often vaccination linked to strict security and hygiene. An inactivated vaccine is now licensed for use in pigeons and obtainable from private veterinary surgeons or a registered pharmacy. A club secretary, who should buy enough vaccine to provide two doses for all the birds involved, may handle the purchase on a group basis."

Also note the decrease in outbreaks as more fanciers vaccinated for PMV. http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/pigeons/stats.htm
As a side bar, our Combine requires all birds to be vaccinated for PMV.

I know that some people believe that because their birds have not gotten sick, that they have some how discovered some new or natural method to prevent PMV. I think this is a little like a parent refusing to have their children vaccinated for any sickness, because they were never vaccinated, and they lived to tell about it. Of course then, they were never the parent of a child with Polio.

Smith Family,I agree that what you said is true for the most part...Maybe even 100% true...But I have been IN the lofts that were in BAD trouble with the PMV virus..Their birds and my birds ALL had the same look and droppings...Remember my father and uncle were pigeon flyers when I was born, and I`m 66 now...I know healthy birds or sick birds when I see them...I told the guys(There IS no CURE) for the virus, and as you know, there still is no cure...You vacinate to give the birds some immunity to the disease when you start racing the youngsters....A Virus is a Air Borne bactaria, passed on by inhaling/exhaling the germs...I locked my birds OUT of the loft,so that from 6am in the morning, untill 8pm at night, they didn`t have to breathe that crap coming out of their mouth, and inhaling the fumes from the droppings...It wasn`t a CURE,I know that...But it saved all of my YB`s except one RCH....I just don`t beleive in vaccinating...I don`t know one pigeon guy who has has POX in their loft here, and nobody vaccinates for POX here that I know of....Why should I vaccinate for something that is not bothering the pigeons health, even in lofts where the hygiene is not that good ???...It is my duty to tell the truth here..Our combine truck holds 43 crates..Usally there is around 35 guys flying young birds...Every flyer has his/her birds on one crate...No birds are mixed from different lofts,ONLY in the Special races for $$$......In Old Birds,it`s allmost the same, unless we will say,I`m shipping 10 cocks and 10 hens..And you are a member and shipping the same...We could and will combine the birds of yours and mine..but in Old Birds, you don`t have that BIG worry about PMV etc,as we do with the YB`s....
To all new pigeon flyers on line here...I want you to listen to Smith Family Loft...He`s saying the right thing for YOU to do....It doesn`t apply to ME,as I have been doing this pigeon thing for many years, starting when I was 12 years old..I`m set in my ways...This is the truth for Alamo, and not really the truth for you...I would not tell you NOT to Vaccinate,if your flying with a club/combine that the YB`s are MIXED up in the baskets....I do not medicate my Stock Birds or OB team UNLESS I don`t like the looks of the droppings etc...No health problems means NO medicine is needed...Now this part of my words here you can listen to me...Give the birds probiotics, garlic, apple cider,or a few drops of Clorex in the water..NOT AT THE SAME TIME !!!....Try to use any NATURAL products available to keep the birds healthy...It is better for them if you do...Then,God forbid, they come down with something, the medicine you use will do a good job,and get the pigeons back to good health......Alamo

Prevention is better than cure. I think if you start racing and mix your birds with others, it is important that you vaccinate. There is greater chance of getting something from being exposed to many birds. Obviously just use common sense. If there is PMV outbreak or some other diseases you better get vaccinated! If not, probably there is less chance of getting the disease that through luck, you wont even encounter it.
With PMV,even YB`s shipped in seperate crates can GET the virus, because it`s an air borne way how it spreads...My Yb`s way back when got the virus before the races started, but I was training my birds with a couple of other guys,so the birds would learn to break away from the flock...I have never trained my birds with anyone else again...My birds don`t see another pigeon, not belonging to me untill August, when the races start...On April 26th,2009,I will bring 3 or 4 of my birds to our combine Auction...I will buy 2 or 3 back, and maybe buy 1 or 2 of someone else`s to fly also...Been doing this for the past 5 or 6 years..And my birds still have not come down with Pox..PMV or anything else that is vaccinated for...My 2007 yb`s,after the 2nd YB race, came down with the YB disease, but in 10 days, with a little medication, they were fine again...In 2008,they didn`t come down with anything.....I must say that,as far as I know, the lofts in my combine will not ship any really sick pigeons...If a bird is not well, and doesn`t show any signs of illness,I would say some/all of these birds are in the races....But I beleive all in all,our 40 guys play it straight when shipping...And I, and everyone else in the IRPC(Interstate Racing Pigeon Combine),of Western Pa,are gratefull to all the members for doing so....And we are a small combine...Could you imagine what kind of health problems, the birds would have,if say 20 lofts are shipping sick pigeons in the Central Jersey Combine, with 300 lofts shipping 4,000 YB`s every week ?? It would be quite a big problem, to alot of really great pigeons in the lofts of that combine...Alamo

Alamo....thank you for your updated post. I have "seen" through the eyes of a local member, what can happen when PMV gets a foot hold in the loft. What can you say to a crying 70 ? something fancier who ends up carrying out 5 gallon buckets of dead pigeons from his loft everyday ? When I saw the pain that man went through...I said to myself I would do whatever I could to prevent that from happening again. In this poor guys case...he did a big no..no....he brought pigeons into his loft compound, and did not use proper bio-security management.
We do recommend to all members that preventative innoculations are part of their regimen. If you fly birds outside, or if they come in contact with other birds, it is essential. You may not need to pox if you don't live in a mosquito infested area. However, Paratyphoid and PMV innocluations are an absolute necessity. This is something that can be so easily prevented, it's not fair to your birds to put them at such risk, nor is it fair to other flyers/fanciers-who's birds come in contact with your birds.

It's SO EASY....with the innoculations and saves a lot of heartache and suffering. Why would anyone do without....
Smith Family,I seen the same thing with my buddy & his wife..They both had seperate lofts, 75ft to 100 ft from each other...61 pigeons died, and his wife cried for weeks...It was as you said,"It`s really sad" to look at.....I think I might be a little lucky + I might be doing a little something right also...I don`t know which one is better..To be lucky or to be good....Alamo
PS: My WVU mens basketball team today took it on the chin at the BIG DANCE !!!
Maybe I should have innoculated them for some DEFENSE !!! hahahahaha!!!!
