can someone tell me if a satinette is the same as an old german owl?

No are not. My suggestion is to go to website http://www.colorpigeons.com/
click on Photo Album look for the 2 breeds then you will see the difference

Satinettes have feathered feet and less of a crest on that back of there head, German owls are clean legged and have more of a shell crest.

Satinette are a kind of old style frill.
