Friends and Fellow Pigeon Lovers,

Over on the 'Photobird' list, Anand Arya, superb bird photographer, announced an international online petition to save the Okhla Bird Park & Wild Life Sanctuary in India. This sanctuary, home to nearly 400 species and, at peak migration, some 25,000+ birds, is threatened by massive, ill-conceived, construction.

After seeing many photographs taken by Mr. Arya at the Okhla Park, this wrings the heart, truly. While this isn't a pigeons-only issue, pigeons and doves will undoubtedly be affected, and I'm sure all who care for birds will be concerned.

Mr. Arya's petition is particularly well thought out, thorough and informative.
It can be read (and signed!) here:
http://www.petitiononline.com/OBPWLS09/petition.html

His own site, with photographs and more information on the Okhla Bird Park, is: http://anandarya.com/

Hoping we can make a smidgen (or should I say smigeon) of difference in the preservation of this glorious and fragile place,
Forest

Hi,

As you may be aware that Okhla Bird Park & Wild Life Sanctuary (OBP-WLS) is a Protected Area and home to almost 400 species. More than 100 species found here are known to breed in the area. The number of birds can exceed 25000 at the peak of migration in winters. A large majority of images that I have shared with you all had been from this area including the Monograph on Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo) I shared with you all in 2007.

Such a rich diversity is generally not found at most places and that too in a very small area. Nairobi is the other known place to show a very high concentration of bird species.

OBL-WLS is under serious threat of being destroyed in double quick time because of a massive construction project that has been undertaken by the Government of Uttar Pradesh just adjacent to the eastern boundary.

I, alongwith another resident of my sector, have filed a petition with the CENTRAL EMPOWERED COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT CONSTITUTED BY THE HON'BLE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA. (CEC)

I NEED SUPPORT

A Petition has been uploaded at the following link:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/OBPWLS09/petition.html

It would add to significant level of support and be heard more loudly at the CEC if there are more than 500 person showing their support.

Should he link in the petition does not open the graphic you can see it here:

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/4AG2SV...0ujsBxdQ/OBS-2008.01.21_1(Marked-Reduced).jpg

I am confident there would be significant support for which I would be personally grateful to you.

Please do take a few minutes to read and sign the petition on line.

If you can pass this request on to your friends who might sign the petition, that too would be much appreciated

Best Regards.
Anand Arya

Bumping up.
I don't think it's too late to sign this petition.
I'm sorry Forest...I just noticed this thread a few minutes ago. I don't know how I missed it.

Thanks, Charis! There are so many worthy causes out there -- it's impossible to keep up with them all, I know... Somehow, perhaps because of all the photos I'd seen of the marvelous birds there, this one just came home to me especially forcefully.
Hoping for the best!
