I check regularly for lost pigeons on Craigslist, to see if I can provide assistance. I recently followed up with someone who found what they thought was a white homing pigeon. Turns out it was at her work, where the resident cat had brought in the bird. I agreed to take it, as she didn't know much about caring for birds. I picked it up about an hour ago, and it doesn't look like a homing pigeon. It has a short beak, and some type of frill on its chest, that can't be seen in the photo. I will try and get a better picture when I get home, so maybe someone can identify it. The bird seems pretty healthy, and was dosed with a broad-spectrum antibiotic as a precaution, although there don't appear to be any puncture wounds. The poops look normal, and the bird appears to be eating and drinking. I'll provide an update once I get the bird home.
sounds like a figurita and he looks pretty sick to me. the feathers look in bad shape..I would say a course of the antibiotic would be needed not just one dose.
not to mention if a pigeon can get caught by a cat..then he is off his game and something is wrong to make it easier for the cat to get a hold of him.
That picture was taken two days ago when they first found it. It looks a whole lot better today - not fluffed up, and pretty feisty when I try and pick it up. I've got the bird in a small animal carrier for now as I'm at work. When I get home, I'll have a better chance to check it out and provide updates. Aren't figuritas small birds? This one seems to be as big as my white homers.
The bird isn't banded. The person who found it thinks that it may have been released along with numerous other white birds for a 9/11 memorial event. (They said that over 200 birds were released, and most of them flew to ledges on buildings and under a bridge after they were released. Sounds like someone who doesn't care much for pigeons released them. )
