Its January and less then 4 months for old bird season. When do people start to train? Especially since hawks are still out here in New York. I know some people let them out in March. This will be my first year racing old birds. Any info is appreciated.
It depends on what system you are planning to fly with old birds. I fly double widowhood, and only train my birds one month before the season. I do three short tosses of 15 miles and one 30 mile toss. During the season, I never exercise my birds and feed them buffet-style. Their motivation is seeing each other quickly before the race and getting to be with their mates after the race.
