I used to have the flat wooden heater but I don't like my water on the floor. I made a wood box 14 in square and us a 40watt light bulb and it works well with the 1 gal plastic fountain with a handle.

Good Idea Dave, think I'll copy you. Does your wood box have a hole in the top for the the heat to come through? If so, what is it, about a three or four inch hole? If no hole, is there some other means of allowing the heat to reach the fountain. I'm in Northern Minnesota and I have to deal with some serious cold up here.
