For those who live in northern areas and have to deal with freezing drinking water, this year I tried putting one of those coffee mug warmers under my water pan. So far, it has worked well. No frozen water, only 23 watts, and under $10.

It would probably melt plastic.

Mine does not have a timer. Either off or on.

yes that sounds like a good and cheap idea right now early mornings some days its in the low 20s out here in Utah i plan on running a portable out of my truck just move here to Utah from Cali what a change had over 100 birds in Cali here not yet been here now 4 months is there anything i should realize about cold freezing weather thanks

We use a metal pan with insulation lining the inside, and a lightbulb inside. Water sits on top and keeps it just warm enough to stay thawed I've also used a heating pad on high.

I built one also. Bought my coffee warmer at Bed, Bath, and Beyond Works perfectly and does not melt plastic.
