I see posts where especially new flyers are upset about losing birds to hawks and can't watch there purty birds loft fly thru the winter. I quit naming my birds due to it. I lock up mid Oct. and start loft flying Aprilish. I started spending my winters preparing for spring. First thing I do is get my feeding down pat for winter. I change mixes and feed for health not endurance. Next I medicate for disease in case they picked something up on the truck thru race season. After probiotics I worm and clean/treat loft then probiotic as normal. The rest of the winter I just enjoy watching in the loft. You can learn as much about each bird in the loft as flying, of course the race clock is what matters. This takes all winter and since I calmed down and started this regiment I also started placing and winning races. I think health is key. Some of you old flyers have some secrets you need to add to my list?
