Hi guys!

I just wanted to stop by quickly and ask for some advice - Airbus got attacked by a cat last week and he's got a bad leg and our vets are useless! At first the vet refused to see him as he's a pigeon but eventually they agreed and I went in and saw some vet who didn't even know how to hold him properly. Anyway, she looks him over very quickly (I think she was scared of him!!) and said his leg wasn't broken but he has a deep wound on his back end and she thinks the nerves have been damaged so he's not moving it at all and he's holding it out to the front of him... Like so...

All the vet did was prescribe antibiotics for his water. Should he have been given painkillers or anything? Is there anything I can get from a pet store that will make him feel a little better? And should I try to do a bit of pigeon physio on him or anything? He seems quite able to stand on his one good leg and he can still fly so will he be able to live a happy life with a bad leg?

At the moment, he's in a large pet carrier in the house, sitting on my old jumper, stuffing his face with seed and digestive biscuits. He seems perky and bright eyed, although he does spend most of his time lying down.

Anything you could tell me at all would be greatly appreciated. I live on an island with very few vets and my only other option is a really rather expensive and long trip to a proper avian vet. Airbus is a little star and I just want to make sure I'm doing all I can for him. :D

I'm going to Pm you Cyro's phone and perhaps you can call her and ask for her advise.
Best you speak directly with someone near by.

Your probably right about that!:D

Hi Georgina,

Leg is very probably a sprain/strain or pulled muscle,pulled/strained tendon...should be fine in a couple weeks.

Laceration-injury on his back, if from a Cat...'Clavamox' or 'Amoxycillin' for a week...with topical Antibiotic on injury site...

If injury is large and gaping, see a different Vet for Sutures.

Gentle supporive care...all should be well soon...

Good luck...

Sorry Charis and Georgina, but I am off to a vet in Sudbury early this morning, according to the AA it is a 2 hour drive away so I am leaving a bit longer than that for the journey .

We call Clavamox Synulox and Noroclav here. Amoxycillin on its own wouldn't be so good as it lacks the Clavulanic Acid which is included in synulox and Noroclav.

Thanks for the medicine tips guys! I'll get in touch with the vet ASAP and see if I can get hold of some. At the moment, he's just on Baytril.

He still seems perky and he's been moving his leg about and wiggling his toes so he's obviously got some movement back in it :) He has been pecking at it a bit though, so I've been bathing it with a little warm water (guessing it's itchy?!).

Cynthia, I hope whoever you took to the vets is fighting fit again soon! :D

Hi Georgina,

Thanks, it is my spaniel Pip. The vet took several biopsies and removed a tonsil, he suspects she could have a squamous cell carcinoma...she had one removed a couple of years ago. I won't know for a few days.

I looked up the surgery on the internet and found this:

http://www.mulberryvets.co.uk/Mulberryvets/birds/..note that it says all birds!

Hi Georgina,

I wondered what exactly this thread was about when I read the title. I love the name Airbus, how did he come to be called that?

I'm sorry to read he's been injured though, he is a gorgeous looking bird.

I don't have much in the way of advice, luckily you've had some from the experts. I hope your vet will give you the meds you need, it's a bit worrying when they don't know how to even hold a bird.

I wish him a good recovery.

Cynthia - awwwwwhh! Poor Pip! Sound's like she's not having a great time at the moment. Give her a big cuddle from me! :D Spaniels are my favorite kind of dogs, I love their ears, all floppy and cute! :D The vets you use looks great! I had a look round the whole site and I'm now a bit jealous that we don't have a vets like that!! Our vets are very good in most aspects but there are no specialists vets, except for livestock and farm animals. If Airbus doesn't get any better with the treatment from my vet, I might well consider a bit of a road trip... I haven't done so far though as the ferry especially is very noisey and it's a long trip. I worry if it's fair to get him that stressed out.

And Janet - Maybe I should have thought the thread title through a bit more! LOL! It doesn't make a lot of sense does it! Heheh! Airbus actually got his name partly from my sister - when him and his sister were chicks I was trying to think of names for them and my sister suggested I named them Plane and Helicopter because they flew... the chat continued with a few more suggestions and they ended up being called Airbus and Boeing! Unfortunately, Boeing didn't come back one day so I no longer have her (the perils of pigeon keeping huh?!). She looked just like Airbus but she had a little crest too. I think there's a picture of the two of them as babies in one of my albums somewhere if you'd like to have a look. :) .....

Just found it, here's the link! http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/album.php?albumid=121&pictureid=1314

Those are sooo cute!

Yes, that surgery is very well equiped, much better than my regular vet's surgery, but that is reflected in the charges: I received the bill for yesterday's visit and it was ÂŁ874.86  Fortunately Pip is insured....but there is no insurance for pigeons!

Thankyou! :D I get a bit carried away with the camera sometimes - I just love to show off my pets!

Airbus went back to the vet for a follow up visit today, seems all is well and healing slowly but surely. He's still not putting any weight on his bad leg but his grab reflexes have returned (allbeit a bit of a wimpy grab!) and his wound has started to close up a bit. I asked about the meds you guys suggested but they don't stock them which is a bit of a disapointment, but Airbus does now have some pain medication. He's practised his hopping the last few days and is now a bit of a pro. And he proved to the vet his wings were in good condition by wriggling out of her grasp and doing a few laps of the waiting room!! LOL!!

He has an appointment in two weeks time again. Until then, he's still on his antibiotics and staying indoors. Hopefully, on the next visit the vet will say he's well enough to rejoin his lady friend Doris and the rest of the pigeons. I'll keep you updated about his progress!!

Hi Georgina,

I'm glad Airbus is improving. It's a surprise that the vets don't have Synulox or Noroclav in stock, I have had that even for my dogs aswell as pigeons. They must use something similar for those occasions where Baytril isn't suitable. I wonder what they use. It may just come under an alternative name but you'd think they'd have heard of one of those.

Hopefully it sounds as if Airbus is doing ok on what you've got.

Do keep us posted, it'll be good when he can get back with the others,

Janet

Georgiana, so sorry Airbus is ailing but I'm so glad you were able to at least find a vet to put him on antibiotics. Our vet has always prescribed only Baytril for cat bites but given orally, not in water. I didn't realize until I joined the forum that other antibiotics may be better for treating cat bites so I now keep those meds on hand all the time but every bird we treated with Baytril survived so I hope that makes you feel better. You might talk to the vet though about giving it orally because I'm usually worried that they may not drink enough water to get enough of the med in them that way. Since the injury occurred last week I think he will probably be okay.

He is a beautiful boy and I sure hope his injuries heal quickly.

I agree. Our UK vets seem to have a limited supply of antibiotics in stock, but they always prescribe synulox or Noroclav after an operation so it is almost guaranteed to be in stock...cats can't tolerate Baytril at higher doses (it can cause some sort of blindness) so the antibiotic of choise tends to be Synulox or Noroclav (they are the same thing, but Noroclav is cheaper and more palatable to dogs and cats).

Oh, that's odd then! I wrote down the names of the meds and gave it to the vet and she went out the back to have a look for them - maybe it's a case of they do use it but had none in stock. Airbus's appointment wasn't until 4:50pm so I guess they could have already used what they had in stock that day. I think I'll ring and ask again just in case. She did give me a painkiller for him though - meloxidyl?! (to be given orally) Excuse my dippy spelling! She was sure to tell me it wasn't licensed for birds and to stop if any side effects develop. I guess if they don't have any pain meds suitable for birds at all, that shows how few meds they actually stock.

In spite of the not quite suitable medicines, Airbus still seems to be doing well - he's been out of his box around the room a few times for some exercise and I don't think anyone who didn't know would realise there was anything wrong with him really. Well, other than him obviously standing on one leg! :D

I use Meloxidyl (it is the same as Metacam, but cheaper) , the dosage that I use is one drop a day. I don't give it for too long and have never had any problems.

i asked if the vet could looks at my birds to give them a check up and the second i said pigeon he said we do not treat vermin sorry at the time i was only 15 and wanted what was best for the birds so i said all right if you do not know how to treat a pigeon you just gotta say i think that made him a bit imbressed as it was in front of a load of peaple with cats and dogs

Good for you! I would of done exactly the same if I had of actually been in the vets when they said no - I rang up unfortunately. They were insistant on saying no to a pigeon but then I said "well he's more of a dove really..." and suddenly it was fine to bring him in. Weird.

Does anyone happen to know how to deter cats?? I got home from work today to find I'm down a pigeon. Airbus's wife in fact. Which is particuly annoying because I was counting on her to perk him up a bit when he goes back outside. Short of investing in an air rifle, I'm a bit stumped. (and for the record, I'd never really shoot anything!). I hate cats so much now though. I wouldn't give a monkeys if they disapeared forever today!

My vet suggested shooting at my cat with a water pistol if he showed any interest in pigeons. He is too interested, so he is a house cat, but that might work on other peoples' cats.

i said pigeon he said we do not treat vermin sorry
I wonder if his response would have been the same if the Queen had asked? I would bet every penny I have that they would be gushing about pigeons if they were invited to care for Her Majesty's loft at Sandringham.

I really dislike the fact that feral pigeons are classified as vermin, but the same doesn't apply to racing pigeons. I would not want to use a vet that is that ignorant or who has so little compassion for animals.

I had had the same vet for 32 years (Chapelfield Veterinary Partnership, Norwich) and I really believed in him ... Then I started rescuing pigeons and found out just how lacking in compassion the partnership was...although I said that I wanted the pigeons treated as my pets I was told that they didn't believe in saving an animal that other people wanted to kill. I started taking my pigeons to Companion Care, who have showed nothing but compasion, so I take all my pets there. I would not trust a vet to treat my cat or my dog if he had no compassion for those animals that are classified as vermin: they are just as capable of affection and pain as any highly regarded animal.

Thanks Cynthia, I'll give that a go! I don't want to upset the neighbours but at the same time, they must know their pets are attacking my birds... I took my handreared pidge out a few days ago and one cat was stalking him whilst he was sat on my shoulder!! I shouted and clapped a lot and it just slipped through to the other side of the fence and sat and watched us. I so wish they were more like dogs and just stayed in their own gardens.

And I totally agree about the vets thing - I can't believe how a business based around animal care can refuse to see... well anything really! I was given a fledgling blackbird with a broken wing last year and they refused to see that, even though I said I'd pay. The blackbird ended up living in my finch avairy as no one would fix it's wing. I find the RSPCA to be much the same too. I appreciate that they are helping most animals but I think they're too picky about where they rehome animals and what they will actually rescue.

Maybe one day, they'll be a decent nationwide animal service... until then, I shall have to put up with my rubbish vet!! :D
