Amazing Story!!

Last year at my Grandfathers house the driveway was full of screws, bolts and nuts everywhere, he said they were falling from the nests above in the trees, the birds carried them over from a hardware store up the street or something..

Hi Judy,

Yes .. starlings are smart like little foxes. They love shiny things as do crows and ravens. I think originally the shine of the quarters is what probably got them started.

Anyway, I think Fred and I both just lost the "battle" for who had the smartest starling .. I think these Maryland birds did us in by a landslide!

Scooter (turtle) is doing great .. got in another big guy about 5 days ago .. don't know what he is but very pretty markings and a really good sized red eared slider today with fishing line hanging out his mouth .. can't see the hook so vet time for him tomorrow.

Also today 7 ducks, 2 pigeons, and three sparrows .. one of which is a one day old naked, eyes closed babe ... Awwwww .. I had everybody self-feeding and here we go again.

Terry,

You got all of them today?

I didn't know anyone would take in turtles. I used to live on a pond that had bass, bluegills, etc... But, mostly over run by ducks and turtles. I also had some dumb neighbor kids that would try to fish in it and when they could catch no fish they decided to catch turtles. After catching a turtle they would be afraid to take the hook out of their mouths, so they would yank on them. When I noticed this I went out to help the turtle. The turtle being exhausted and in pain was not hard to unhook.

Now the second time I saw the boys doing this I yelled at them. (Assuming the first time there was a mistake and they were just scared.) After that I had no problem with the dumb unsupervised kids.

One day I foudn a dead turtle on shore. Most likely from the result of a fish hook being torn from it. So, if I had known of a place that could have helped these turtles, I would have taken them in to be examined.

I wish I lived by you Terry.

Hi Julie,

Yes, that group was all from one day .. the 7 ducks, 2 pigeons, 3 sparrows, and the red eared slider. Some days are just more "fun" than others.

You might try locating a herpetological group in your area or a specifically turtle/tortoise group that could help you with any sick or injured turtles. Good for you to try to stop the cruelty to them.
