Yesterday I noticed a pigeon in my back yard. When I approached it, it walked away but couldn't fly. It spreads its wings but only gets a few feet away. I don't see anything unusual. I offered it water, unboiled rice, sunflower seeds and bread. Today it is still there. I'm not sure it had eaten but it roams around in the yard. The walls are quite high so it can't get out. It has pooped a couple of times (white/green). I want to help the little fellow but it's getting difficult keeping it away from cats, including my own outside cat. Any help appreciated.

A youngster that probably has not learned to eat by himself. Sounds weak, too weak to fly and producing starvation droppings. Can you bring him inside and put him in your bathroom or a quiet room? Do you have frozen peas/corn? Defrost in warm water and handfeed to him. Aim for 90 peas per day divided into 3 meals of 30 each. Make sure the crop empties inbetween feedings.

Any rescue centres you can take him to?

I've seen him drink but not eat. I'll look into rescue centres but I don't own a car. If he's still there tomorrow I'll take him inside and try to feed him peas. How long should I do that?

I saw another pigeon sit beside him for a brief moment but it wasn't feeding him and it looked like a different kind.

Can you please offer seeds/peas right now? Birds can starve to death very quickly, it may be too late if you wait

Thank you for your replies. The bird is still there. Taking it inside is not an option. All the food I left out is gone. I don't know if he ate it or other birds did.

I called a local rescue and they said to leave it alone as the parents are nearby and it needs to learn to fly. However it's just sitting there all day long, for three days in a row now. I do see other pigeons nearby but there's little interaction.

When I approach it, it runs away and hides under a bush, so I don't think handfeeding it peas is an option either.

You have established that this bird is most likely a fledgling, so this probably doesn't apply. An adult bird that has no obvious injuries and is unable to fly - especially if it's eating dirt - is probably a potassium deficiency. A potassium deficiency can lead to muscle weakness, including the muscles involved in digestion, which may cause nausea and vomiting. And once a bird with a potassium deficiency starts vomiting, it needs intervention, because it will die within a day or less.

But like I said, you've established that is not the case with your bird.

Anyway, keep Trace Minerals (the product) on hand in the event that this ever happens, or for yourself. For a pigeon that can't fly, I would syringe feed water with a few drops from an electrolyte concentrate from Trace Minerals (found it at Whole foods, but I'm sure you can get it online). It contains magnesium, chloride, sodium, and potassium. No flavorings, no sugar.
