I have an in-shock pigeon that my dog found (And didn’t touch) behind the bbq on the patio. It allowed me to gently pick it up and I have placed it in a box with food and water. Do I bring it into the house as we have foxes in the garden at night? I checked it and it doesn’t have anything visibly obvious wrong with it. Wings and feet seem ok so maybe it’s just in shock. What do I do? Please advise. I’m based in Poole in the UK

I brought it in and this morning it seems okay. I put it outside and it drank some rain water. ( it wouldn’t drink from the bowl of water I left with it) and it tried to fly but landed on its breast and lay on the ground. So I have put it back in the box. Not sure what else to do or where to take it..? No ring on it’s leg

Definitely, keep it indoors and in a padded small crate or box. Make sure it gets warmth and mix a bit of sport drink in the water if it is in shock, not moving, and or breathing deeply or fast. In that case, keep it calm and quite warm (about 40-43C will do).

You may have to try and see if it can drink and eat bird seed on it's own. Sometimes, a very young pigeon isn't fully weaned, and you then have to either force feed it defrosted thawed peas by gently prying the beak open and popping in enough peas like a dozen to start with each time for a few times a day, or provide seed mix. Some youngsters will need serious effort and schooling to get them to eat seeds by coaxing or observation, whilst others seem to have the instinct and curiosity to eat quite fine. Do not try and force water in the same way, but merely dip the beak into a short water cup so it knows there's water there if the dish is not clear. Vitamins, calcium deficiency or lack of proper nutrition can cause weakness, so try to buy some pet bird vitamin drops and pet lizard calcium supplement spray, yeah, and follow instructions as per the packages.

I hope there is no serious injuries. Landing like that is not normal. Be sure to see if the pigeon can stand on its feet. Perhaps it is malnourished. Could you snap a few pictures of it and post them here? I am curious on its age and condition. Not to be crude or anything, but how is it's droppings? Loose, watery diarrhoea especially dark forest green, is generally a sign of a bacterial infection. In that case, little bird will need the right diagnosis to be well on the mend. But I have seen pigeons struggle in developing flying strength compared to most if they are runts or undernourished whilst in the nest. It can happen.

Thank you so much I will try that. It’s droppings are like the usual pigeon droppings I suppose. I’ll keep an eye on it today and keep you updated. I’ll try to post some photos on here too. Thank you
